Research Strategy

Our mission is to improve people’s health and wellbeing through outstanding education, research and knowledge exchange.

We address the important health challenges of our time using specialist infrastructure, skills and strong partnerships with the public, patients, industry, our NHS partners, and other stakeholders.

Driven by a spirit of inquiry, our world-leading researchers engage across the research landscape, from fundamental research and discovery science, translational science and experimental medicine, applied healthcare research, data and informatics through to policy and knowledge exchange.

Our state-of-the-art research facilities and myriad of interdisciplinary collaborations provide the ideal platform for ground-breaking discoveries and advancements in medical science that serve to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice.

Our goals

  1. We will enhance our world-class research infrastructure, environment and a skills-based research culture, nurturing careers and attracting and retaining the best research talent.
  2. We will increase partnerships with patients, the public and other key stakeholders to maximise engagement with our research and ensure our research aligns with their needs.
  3. We will increase partnerships with industry and drive innovation and impact from our research regionally, nationally, and internationally.
  4. We will grow inter- and intra-disciplinary excellence alongside addressing the most important health-related challenges of our time.

Impact

  • Translational research bridges key gaps between invention, evaluation and adoption, driving significant changes in medical practice and clinical guidelines.
  • Our ambitious patient engagement programmes link researchers with patients and the public from early research stages. This will help identifying important questions to advanced stages of adoption of research findings.
  • Our commercial collaborations are accelerating the pace of drug and treatment development. We are working with firms in the UK and internationally. We are creating successful spin-out companies and transforming intellectual property into valuable innovations.
