Undergraduate students attending a Maths lecture

How to apply in Clearing

We welcome Clearing applications from all qualified applicants – whether you've applied to us previously, changed your study plans after receiving results, or you're applying to universities for the first time.

This guidance (and our Clearing hotline) are for UK students and any students assessed as 'home' for fees purposes. If you are an international student, please see our international applicants area for the correct guidance and contact details.

Are you currently holding a conditional offer from us?

We'll update your offer once we receive your results (via UCAS or from you, depending on what exams you have taken).

In some cases we may still be able to accept students who have narrowly missed the grades in your offer. So please wait for us to assess your results and update your offer before applying through Clearing.

See our guidance on results day and submitting exam results.

Your step-by-step Clearing Guide

Check out our Clearing vacancies below for any course that interests you.

You will see our Clearing entry requirements on this page. You can also click on a course listing to view full details, modules and fees.

You will need to select 'UK students' to see our courses that are open for students who are assessed as 'home' for fees purposes.

Please note you can only apply for one UoN course at a time in Clearing, so if multiple courses interest you, it's important you do your research to decide which is right for you.

Our Clearing entry requirements for each course are listed on our Clearing course vacancies page. We have updated these requirements for UK students in Clearing and they may differ slightly from our standard requirements.

If you don't see your qualifications on the listing, you can still apply for the course, but please read our alternative qualifications guidance before you ring the hotline.

Our minimum English language requirements are grade 4 or C at GCSE English language (or equivalent) but some courses need a higher grade so please check the requirements for your course.

If you have taken academic qualifications in another country, see our webpage for your country  and our guidance on English language requirements.

Once you have found a course that interests you, and you meet the requirements, get everything ready to make your application to Nottingham.

We can only make unconditional offers during Clearing so you must have received your final exam results before applying.

You will need:

  • your UCAS number
  • full details of your qualifications and exam results
  • the course title and course code of the course that you want to apply for

You can only make one application at a time. Each course has a limited number of places available and due to the high numbers of applications we receive, our courses sometimes fill up quickly.

We cannot guarantee that a place will be available on your chosen course, even if this was showing as available on our website when you applied.

You can make a Clearing application by filling in our online application form or by calling our Clearing hotline on 0330 041 5590 once you have your results.

We recommend using the form, as the hotline can get busy at peak times and it's assessed in exactly the same way.

If you are applying directly to Clearing without having made a previous UCAS application, you will need to register with UCAS to confirm your place. It's a good idea to do this while you wait for us to get back to you. Have a look at UCAS' Clearing guidance to find out what you need to do.

After you have made an application, you should receive a confirmation email within approximately 15 minutes, confirming your details and that we are handling your Clearing application. If you don't receive this email, please check your junk or spam folder.

If it's not there either, call us on 0330 041 5590 to check that we have the correct email address recorded.

We will contact you by email after assessing your application – although we may also contact you by phone if we require any further information.

We cannot give an exact timeframe of how quickly you will receive an update from us, but we try to make a decision as quickly as possible. Applications are considered in the order they are received.

It may be the case that your chosen course becomes full before we've been able to assess your application. If this happens, we will contact you and you may be able to apply for another course still open in Clearing.

Decisions will be communicated via email so please make sure to check your junk and spam folders.
