Helping a student apply through Clearing
Your guide to helping a student to navigate Clearing – as a parent, guardian, family member, teacher, school counsellor or education agent.
Applying through Clearing can be a stressful and confusing experience for many students, and may mean rethinking their study plans.
Support and guidance from their family or education professionals can help them get through the process and make a bright start to their university life.
Want to find out more? Join our online event on Thursday 7 August to hear from our admissions, accommodation and student life teams.
Applications for Clearing are now open for any students who have received their final results. Students waiting for A level results or other qualifications to be confirmed must receive their final results before they apply.
Check our list of Clearing vacancies and filter by 'UK' or 'international' (overseas) fee status, as places in Clearing are limited and not all courses will be available to both groups. If you're unsure of your fee status, check the guidance with UKCISA.
The first step is to use our course vacancy lists (available from 5 July) to find a suitable course. We have a list for home students and one for international students. Final listings will be live on the evening of Wednesday 13 August.
Once students have found a course, they can apply in two ways:
The enquiry form for international students will be available from 5 July.
However applicants choose to apply, they will need the below information to hand:
Clearing applications should usually be made by the students themselves rather than parents, agents or other persons. Under UCAS policies and data protection rules, we can only discuss your child or student's application if you are a nominated contact in their UCAS application. See our privacy policy for more information.
A provisional offer is issued if there are spaces available, and is based on an applicant's declaration that they meet the specified entry requirements. Where a provisional offer is given, applicants will be advised to refer themselves to UCAS to select ‘University of Nottingham’ as their Clearing choice within the given deadline. The deadline will be sent out as soon as possible, once they have an offer.
Offers for UK students will be provisional until grades are confirmed via UCAS after referral. We do not check an applicant's grades until they refer themselves in the UCAS hub.
Certain courses may interview before a decision is made. Email communications will be sent to confirm details where appropriate.
Applicants will receive communications at all stages of the process. Please ensure students are monitoring their emails including junk and spam folders.
When students successfully apply through Clearing, they will receive a confirmation email for a place to study at the University of Nottingham. This email will include a link to apply for accommodation.
As part of the application, students need to let us know their accommodation preferences. We aim to allocate them to one of their preferred accommodation types where possible. Students with a medical condition or disability should contact us directly and we will do our best to help.
We guarantee all first-year students a place in university-arranged accommodation as long as they apply by Friday 22 August 2025 (subject to terms and conditions).
We work with trusted partners and ensure their lowest rates when booked via the university, with transparent and upfront pricing which includes utilities and WiFi.
After students have applied for accommodation, they will receive an email confirming receipt of their application. We will then contact them with further details about their offer within five working days, if not sooner.
Once they have received their room offer, they should carefully review it including the relevant terms and conditions.
