Studying abroad as a politics student
Politics and International Relations students share their experiences of studying abroad.
Sylvie spent a year studying at the University of Hong Kong. In her video, she talks about the highlights of her experience, from studying human evolution to meeting other exchange students. Sylvie also made the most of her time on the other side of the world, travelling to Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and mainland China.
Sharmel spent time at the University of Nottingham Malaysia. This campus is a one-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, with a taxi costing around £10-15 from campus to the city.
Choosing to study here means enjoying warm weather all year round, a low cost of living, and easy access to travel to other exotic countries. Sharmel travelled to Cambodia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Bali, Borneo and Vietnam.
Studying abroad has made me a lot more open minded, independent and confident talking to new people.

Moving to a different country gives you a unique opportunity to embed yourself in a new culture. This type of experience is great to talk about when applying for jobs as it shows you’re adaptable, you have intercultural skills, and like with Sharmel, it can boost your confidence.
From a subjective perspective, it can expose you to new topics which could start a new passion. For Shamel, she enjoyed learning about environmental politics in Malaysia.
Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime experience, you make amazing memories and friends from all around the world. My advice is to try and do every experience and opportunity out there.
