Musicians and singers wanted

Continue your musical interests and make friends

Whether you love singing songs from musicals or want to play an instrument in a chamber group, you’ll find your place in our friendly music community. There are plenty of bands, choirs and ensembles always looking for new members. And don’t worry if you’re not studying music - these opportunities are open to all our students.

University orchestra and choirs

Philharmonia is our longstanding flagship orchestra. Each term, they perform a public concert in venues on and around the University Park campus. The orchestra plays an inspiring, exciting and challenging repertoire. Student soloists and world-renowned guest artists including Xuefei Yang, Natalie Clein and the Amatis Trio have performed with the orchestra.

Our students, staff and alumni make up this friendly choir that perform a wide range of choral music. This is a great opportunity to experience singing in a professionally led, large-scale choir. Open to all students, staff and alumni who can read music and love singing.

Our chamber choir is an auditioned, professionally led choir that has around 30 singers. As well as performing concerts of its own, it also performs alongside the University Choir and University Philharmonia. The choir usually performs two or three concerts a year.

For more information about our university orchestra and choirs please email Dr Catherine Hocking, Lakeside Arts Head of Music Programmes, or Dr Laszlo Rozsa, Department of Music Director of Performance.

What our students say... Kyle

"The societies are quite a heavy part of what we do. There’s so much going on. You get the opportunity to meet a lot of other people in the university and you spend a lot of time with other students who are not in the Department of Music. It’s really nice."
