Dr Kemp presented in a session focused on 'First Contact: The real rights of children in contact with the police'. Dr Kemp gave a presentation on the research she is currently working on with Dr Miranda Bevan - where we are working in partnership with the police and other agencies piloting a Child First approach in police custody.
During the session, Dr Kemp and Dr Bevan took the opportunity to launch their re-vamped 'Know My Rights' website - which includes video clips that set out what happens when children are interviewed by the police as a suspect - both in custody and when interviewed on a voluntary basis. This is the only website that provides information not only on children's rights but also provides children with a way of finding a local duty solicitor to assist them through the 'Find my Solicitor' function. Work is being done in finalising making the videos from the webiste available through an app so that these can be downloaded offline, which is important when used in police custody.
