The Virtual Desktop is a cloud-based service that allows you to access university applications, filestores ad OneDrive.

  • All students have access to the Student Desktop
  • All staff have access to the Staff Desktop
  • Students and staff in Computer Science can access the Computer Science Desktop, which includes specialist software
  • Students and staff in Engineering can access the Engineering Desktop, which includes specialist software
  • The GPU Desktop can be used to access software which requires graphically intense processing.


Note: This service should not be used to access general Microsoft 365 applications

  

Setting up Virtual Desktop

Important: Please do not save files on the virtual desktop folders (Desktop, Documents or Downloads) and this is only temporary storage. Always save your files to OneDrive. 

Install the Windows app to use the Virtual Desktop. 

Alternatively, you can use a web browser and follow the relevant steps for your operating system: 
 

1. Download and install Windows App
2. Once installed, open Windows App
3. Click Sign In
4. Sign in with your university email address and password when prompted
5. You will then be asked to Approve sign-in request
6. If asked 'Stay signed in to all your apps', click the text No, sign in to this app only
7. If asked to review University of Nottingham terms of use, please read and accept if you agree.
8. Double click the relevant desktop that is presented to you
9. Enter your university email address and password to start the desktop
10. You will now see the virtual desktop starting up
1. Get and install Microsoft Remote Desktop from the Mac App Store
2. Once installed, open Microsoft Remote Desktop
3. Click on the Workspaces tab
4. Click Add Workspace
5. Enter this URL: rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com
6. Click Add
7. Enter your university email address, click Next
8. Enter your password, click Sign in
9. You will then be asked to Approve sign-in request
10. Double click the relevant desktop that is presented to you
11. Enter your university email address and password when prompted to start the desktop
12. You will now see the virtual desktop starting up
1. Get the Windows App from the Google Play Store
2. Once installed, open the Windows App
3. Read and accept the privacy statement and licence terms if you agree
4. Tap Sign In and use your university account details
5. Tap on the relevant desktop that is presented to you
6. Enter your university email address and password to start the desktop
7. You will now see the virtual desktop starting up
1. Get the Microsoft Remote Desktop Mobile app from the App Store
2. Once installed, open RD Client app
3. Tap the Workspaces tab
4. Tap the + sign in the top right corner of the screen
5. Tap Add Workspace
6. Enter the following Workspace URL: rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com
7. Tap Next
8. Enter your university email address, tap Next
9. Enter your password, tap Sign in
10. You will then be asked to Approve sign-in request
11. Tap on the relevant desktop that is presented to you
12. Enter your university email address and password to start the desktop
13. You will now see the virtual desktop starting up

Accessing software in the Virtual Desktop


After you have logged into the Virtual Desktop, follow these steps if you cannot see the software you require on the desktop: 

  1. Click Start
  2. In the search box, type the name of the software or scroll down the list of apps until you find the UoN Applications folder
  3. Select the software you require
