Xiaojie Cheng - MSc Information Systems and Operations Management
With a strong technical background in algorithm optimisation and system development, Xiaojie Cheng found the MSc Information Systems and Operations Management course at Nottingham University Business School the ideal next step in her professional journey.
She explained: “The practical, hands-on teaching approach helped me develop my existing skills in demand analysis and process management, gained during my internships at Boka Software and Weaver, into more strategic thinking. The university’s partnerships with companies like IBM and SAP, along with its global alumni network, provided the ideal platform to work towards my goal of becoming a product manager or technical consultant. The course really helped me to bridge the gap between technical expertise and business value.”
Xiaojie chose the Business School for its academic reputation, industry-focused course content, and international connections. She particularly valued the focus on translating technical knowledge into strategic problem-solving.
Reflecting on her decision, Xiaojie said: “These global collaborations gave me access to real-world training and professional insights. Combined with the university’s strong alumni presence in European tech industries and my own international experience, it’s been the ideal foundation for launching a global career.”
One highlight for Xiaojie was the E-Business module which explored cutting-edge technologies such as IoT and AI in finance. The coursework simulated real consulting scenarios that allowed students to act as management consultants, applying digital tools to solve business problems. She said: “The module connected digital innovation with real-world business challenges. I enjoyed acting as a management consultant and applying my technical background to solve business problems, it mirrors the kind of work I hope to do after graduation.”
Industry experience and career plans
Studying at the Business School helped build on Xiaojie's internship experience where she supported international clients and worked on process improvement projects, whilst also improving her strategic thinking. She said:
“In the future, I plan to focus on digital transformation or smart supply chain practices to works towards technical management roles. The course prepared me for the workplace through real-world projects like consultancy reports and introductions to industry leaders. Hearing from guest speakers, such as IBM, gave me the confidence to tackle business problems with technology, communicate effectively, and grow a professional network that supports my careers goals.”
Guest lectures and case studies from global companies further improved Xiaojie’s perspective, enhancing her cross-cultural awareness and critical thinking which are skills she found were essential for the future.
Looking ahead, Xiaojie plans to use her expertise in system design, data analysis and process optimisation to solve challenges such as improving supply chain efficiency or creating AI-driven solutions. She said: "I want to work on global projects, drawing on my international experience, such as supporting overseas clients and my fluency in English. Ultimately, I hope to become a leader who bridges technology and business innovation.”
Life in Nottingham
Outside the classroom, Xiaojie made the most of opportunities to get involved. She attended conferences and served as a Sustainability and Societal Impact Fellow contributing to the Business School’s sustainability and societal impact agenda through a range of impactful projects.
Xiaojie also enjoyed student life in Nottingham adding: “Living in university accommodation made it easy to settle in. The campus is beautiful, the sports centre helped me unwind, and the city is really convenient for students. There’s a strong sense of community here.”
Advice to future students
Reflecting on her experience, Xiaojie encourages prospective students to make the most of every opportunity. She concludes:
“The course not only focused on the latest tech trends but also used industry projects to simulate real business situations. This helped me turn my technical skills into strategic thinking. The diverse international environment improved my cross-cultural communication skills, and the alumni network also gave me access to valuable career support.
